Objectives of the workshop
Teacher Education is a prerequisite for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) providing pupils and adult learners with the skills and competencies they need to take part in creating a Sustainable Development (SD) and for Lifelong Learning (LLL). This seminar highlights the competencies that teachers and teacher trainers need in ESD.
Outcomes of, among other projects, the EU Comenius project “CSCT” (Curriculum, Sustainable Development, Competences, Teacher Training), which aimed at developing a competency-based curriculum for education for sustainable development in initial teacher training and in-service training institutions, will serve as a starting point for the discussions.
The seminar participants will discuss how to systematically develop ESD competences and how to implement ESD in Teacher Education. The results and findings of the seminar will help reorient the practice of the teachers and teacher trainers towards new ways of teaching and learning ESD. One of the aims of the seminar will also be to contribute to the design of a new Comenius project on the topic of competence portfolio as a tool for fostering and demonstrating ESD and LLL competences.
Programme outline:
Keynotes by international experts will highlight the topics “Competences for ESD”, “Quality Criteria for ESD schools”, “Portfolio as a tool for working on individual and team competences in schools” and others. Teachers and teacher trainers will discuss the range of necessary competencies needed for ESD, and for providing the learners with LLL competencies as well as how to develop and assess such competences. Participants will try out methods and exchange experiences, and find ways of implementing the findings into their own work. School visits and excursion programmes in the beautiful Tyrolean mountains will serve as references and will also support the intercultural exchange.
